AMIE GARTENBERG: I help families and individuals transfer wealth from their generation to the next. Most people want to be in control of their means and of their healthcare for the rest of their lives and enable their families to know who's in charge and how to handle things. And I assist clients in being able to have a structure to make that happen with the least possible anxiety for them. One of the things my clients find the most surprising is how much additional cost is involved by a failure to plan. Having a will, having a power of attorney, a living will, enables them to transfer their assets, control their healthcare without the involvement of the court. If you don't have those documents in place, then the court will be involved. And it is an expensive and invasive process that no one likes. Many people come to me. And they are embarrassed to have not done a will or to not done any of the documents. And I say it is never too late. The alternative is not good. It is wonderful to have a set of documents in place, allow things to happen smoothly and easily.
